Cumbuco is a small fishing village about 25 km from the international airport of Fortaleza. This scenic little town has started to attract more tourists, both domestic and international. The reason for this is simple; Cumbuco has the most beautiful, and quiet, beach near Fortaleza on one side of town and the famous sand dunes on the other side. Cumbuco also has perfect conditions for kite surfing and wind surfing. The small, but always busy, center is build around the main square, as in every Brazilian town, which has a fresh fish market, a church and, of course, the inevitable football pitch.

The center is right next to the beach, which is lined with beautiful tropical palm trees and where one can find a dozen or so beach restaurants (barracas). After sunset a few of these remain open and other restaurants, and bars, also open their doors to Brazilians and foreigners alike. One can see the locals gather on and around the main square (prazinha) and what strikes one is the great number of children playing until well into the night, which attributes to the relaxed atmosphere in this idyllic village. One straight away feels at home here, and at the same time very very relaxed. This is typical Brazil

Because it is nearly always windy, Cumbuco is an ideal spot for kite surfing Cumbuco is, due through the weather conditions, one of the few spots on earth where it is possible to kite surf every day. The best months are August until December, these months you can kite every day with 10, 12 or 14m² kites. January and February are the months with the least wind. February to April is rain season and the constant wind starts normally in June, so do not forget to bring a 16 or an 18m² kite if you come between January and June and then there is a chance there is little or no wind. Behind Cumbuco are some really big dunes. The Dunes are creating some really warm air, which creates the every day blowing wind. The wind increases the more north you go. Not necessary to bring a wet suit Almost the whole year the water is like 20 to 25 degrees. Wave surfing and windsurfing is also done quite a lot here. Outside of Cumbuco are other locations that are ideal for kite surfing, like next to the bridge between Icarai and Tabuba, at the Lagoa, ideal for beginners, and at Cauipi and Paracuru. Transport must be taken care of by yourself because there is no local transport here (also no taxis here), which is why most kitesurfers rent a car, like a VW Golf with air-conditioning or a buggy and a Toyota Hilux, this is ideal for groups of people.
